I've taken a 6 month career break to help me decide what I want to do when I grow up! This BLOG will record my adventures and chart my progress as I cycle the western pacific coast of the US for Room to Read. Find out what I've been up to and how I'm getting on...

Day 1 Report

First the stats - I know some of you love these!

Total miles 31.9
Average speed 11.2 mph
Total Ascent 351m

A short day to get into the swing of it and ease my back into action. It was a bit stiff first thing due to 10 hours on the plane yesterday! However, I felt I could go on for longer so bodes well. I stopped in a pretty uninspiring place called Surrey.

I started the day by shipping my bike box to San Diego. A member of the San Diego Bike Club has very kindly offered to store it for me until I get there. Many thanks!

On to the conditions - very hot! Scorchio! Factor 50 applied with no shame. Cycling conditions were not great. I hardly got out of town, in fact I don't think I did. There was one good bit along a riverside. But moistly town riding which is quite slow here with stop signs and lights at the end of every block on the grid system. However, I'm looking forward to getting out in the country in the coming days.

I was surprised to have climbed over 300 m today as it was mostly pancake flat. The biggest climb I recall was actually a bridge. There was a big bridge on an early stage of the tour de france this year that actually got a climb classification. If you remember that it gives you a good idea about this bridge. Granny gear was almost deployed, but I decided to save it for later trails.

Ok, a short and sweet first report. I've had a bit of trouble with communication technology today so |I'll try to catch up on photos when I get to an internet cafe (if such things exist anymore! - not found one yet.)

Tomorrow I cross the border into the United States. Bring it on.

  3. Jimmy boy - i have returned from my hols and i'm delighted to see that you are blogging again. I am however, most unchuffed that there is a techy issue stopping photo blogging :( we really should have thought of this.

Anyway, glad to see that the reason for the back niggle has not been blogged.

Keep em coming. I know that Cervi stores them off and reads them in 5 week chunks :)
